Tips for Fitting Out Your First Home With Window Treatments

So you’ve bought your first home? Congrats!

What to choose for your first home

One of the best things about moving into your own home after renting for so long is the freedom to do whatever you want. Hang a picture, paint the walls, replace the dull old drapes with new blinds - the choice is all yours!

The window dressings you choose can make all the difference to the look and feel of your home, so it’s important to choose the right ones. Here are our top tips to for fitting out your new home with blinds:

#1: Don’t settle for blinds you don’t love.

Fallen in love with a style of blind that’s out of your budget? Don’t panic. If you can’t afford to deck out your whole house in the blinds you love, maybe you can prioritise the rooms you’ll be using the most, or those that are outward facing. Set yourself a lower budget for the rooms that aren’t seen or used as much.

Make do with newspaper or temporary blinds until you’ve saved enough money to buy the blinds you love. It’s much better to wait and do it properly than to regret your purchase.

#2: Think about the purpose of the room.

Before you select your blinds, ask yourself what each room is going to be used for. Theatre room? You’ll want Blockout Curtains so it’s as dark as possible. Living area? Go for treatments with excellent light control, such as Sheers, so you can enjoy plenty of natural light during the day. Bathroom? Your blinds will need to be waterproof and durable like Aluminium Venetians. With that in mind, the next step is deciding how much privacy you need in the room. Knowing what you need from the window dressings in each room is key to choosing the right ones.

#3: Settle on a style.

This is a big one. Whether you want wow factor or you’re going for a room that looks well put-together, it’s important to settle on a colour palette and overall style before you choose your blinds. Are you going for a traditional style? Modern? Boho? Visit your local showroom armed with the style of the room in mind and it will make the job of choosing fabrics, materials and colours a lot easier.

#4: Consider the upkeep.

It is a good idea to think about how much effort and time you want to spend maintaining your blinds. Blinds these days are fairly low maintenance, but some require a little more TLC than others Purchase the equipment or products to clean your blinds with right away - it’ll make the upkeep much easier and you won’t procrastinate cleaning when you know you’ve got what you need on hand.
