Renovating? Here are 5 common decorating mistakes to avoid

Keep reading to learn some common decorating mistakes you can easily avoid, plus get some handy interior decorating tips.

Do-it-yourself decorating projects can be daunting. From decision fatigue and being time-poor to limited budgets and fearing making costly mistakes, there are plenty of reasons to not get started.

To give you the confidence to start decorating your interior, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of five common decorating mistakes and tips on how to avoid them.

Top decorating mistakes to avoid

1. Skipping the planning phase

If you’re anything like us, you might agree that the planning stage is often the best part of the decorating process. Go old school and tear out pages from your favourite lifestyle magazines, follow some awesome (but affordable) interior accounts on Insta, or create your own digital mood boards on Pinterest.

This process will provide you with plenty of inspiration to discover what you love and determine what works in your space. When it comes to window treatments, give us a follow on Instagram or Pinterest for inspiration.

2. Rushing the job

One thing you never want to do is choose any type of furniture or paint for your home in haste. Often, this leads to trend-driven purchases, which lack longevity. This can also rack up your decorating costs pretty quickly, as measuring mistakes are easily made when you’re in a hurry.

Instead, we recommend taking the time to choose pieces that are well-suited to your space, and that you’ll be happy with for years to come. If you’re lucky, some of the items you’ve been eyeing off may also come on sale. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait!

3. Not viewing fabrics or furnishings in person

As convenient as shopping online can be, nothing quite compares to viewing (and touching) fabrics when they’re in front of you. Expectations of an item online can be very different to reality, particularly when it comes to colours and textures. Luckily for you, we have multiple showrooms around the Perth metro area and the greater WA region for you to check out your new blinds before you buy. We can also come to you during a free style consultation to present swatches and offer suggestions for your home.

4. Playing it safe with style

Step into most Aussie homes and you’ll be sure to find a neutral colour palette paired with understated furnishings – and for good reason! Playing it safe with style may give you a timeless look, but it can also result in a home that borders on bland.

While we don’t recommend going all out with loud colours and crazy decorative pieces (unless that’s your jam, of course), we do recommend the odd adventurous decision. Consider experimenting with eye-catching artwork, an eclectic piece of furniture or even patterned blinds. All of these are easy to incorporate and will add some life to the room.

5. Prioritising fashion over function

Sometimes you stumble on a piece of furniture, item of clothing, or light fixture that you’re instantly drawn to. But it’s all too easy to get caught in the trap of purchasing items that are merely fashionable rather than functional, like a gorgeous sofa that’s terrible for lounging on, or drapes that hang beautifully without providing light or privacy control.

Before making an important purchase, always ask yourself if the item will function as it’s intended. For all things decorative (think vases, picture frames and so on), that’s where you can let your hair down!
