Your Guide to Types of Awnings: Which Style is Right for You?

Apart from adding plenty of style and character to your home, awnings are an effective way to regulate the temperature both inside and outside your home.

Just like fingerprints, we understand that no two homes are alike! That’s why we have a variety of different window awnings available in our product range, each with their own unique benefits.

Before you make any snap decisions about the style of outdoor blinds or outdoor awnings you would like for your home, read this quick guide to the four main styles of awnings we offer.

Auto awnings

This style of awning is a popular pick for Perth folk. The best thing about installing auto awnings is their ability to reflect up to 70% of the sun’s heat before it reaches your window. Not only does this make your home cooler during the summer but it also means you can save some precious dollars on your energy bills.

When it comes to installation, auto awnings are ideal for ground floor or balcony windows. Once installed, they can be raised and lowered to any position simply by sliding the arms on the guide rods. Easy!

Retractable awnings

Retractable awnings, also known as folding arm awnings or canopy awnings, are the perfect choice if you’re wanting to extend your outdoor living space. This type of folding awning provides overhead shelter from the sun throughout the year.

The main benefit of retractable awnings is that they’re designed to retract completely against your exterior wall when they’re not needed (as the name suggests). In doing so, the awning itself is protected from wind and heavy rain and even hail (remember the destructive Perth hailstorm of 2010?), which means they’ll be protected from any damage.

Pivot arm awnings

These awnings can easily be used on most windows and doors around your home, but they’re especially useful for windows that open outwards, bi-fold doors or sliding doors. Once installed, pivot arm awnings allow plenty of space for the window or door to open without obstructing the movement of the awning itself.

One of the main reasons to install these awnings is to increase airflow in your home. Pivot arm awnings work to direct heat and sunlight away from your home’s interior, meaning you can keep your windows open even on really hot days.

Wireguide awnings

Wireguides are a type of patio awning that are minimal and stylish in appearance. Not only do they look bang-on-trend, wireguide awnings are also designed to be fully retracted when not in use. With this feature, they’ll never block your view of the outside world!

If you have a coastal home, we recommend installing wireguide awnings as they’re super practical when it comes to offering protection from the sun and being able to easily enjoy your view. You can read more about the best awnings for sun protection here.

Customising Your Awnings

Awnings, like everything else for your home, come in plenty of different shapes and styles. Our tip: Don’t forget the valance! From straight borders to scallop edges, there are loads of design options for the valance of your awnings that will add the perfect finishing touch.
