Your guide to window curtains
Curtain styles
Before you part with your money for window curtains, it’s important to think about the functional requirements of the room. Knowing what you’ll need from your curtains plays a huge role in selecting a style.
Blockout: Curtains that completely block out light and allow for maximum privacy.
Sheer: Lightweight, translucent fabrics that let light through, perfect for ambience and light control.
Traditional: Victorian style curtains.
Decorative: Where looks are everything!
Curtain Fabrics
Scrim: A very light fabric often made from a relaxed, cotton weave. Perfect for a weightless, refined look, scrims offer the perfect balance of light and privacy.
Prints: Playful prints in a range of colours are the perfect way to add personality to your space.
Textures: Casual linens and textured cotton offer a relaxed, cosy and bang on-‐trend aesthetic.
Metallic: Glam and chic, metallic sheers are a big 2017 trend.
Layers: The technique of using blinds in conjunction with curtains.
Fabric is the most important part of the curtain. Choose a fabric for the function, durability and overall look that you’re after. When it comes to fabrics, the options are almost endless, so we couldn’t list them all here!
How they hang
Curtain tracks: The curtain moves along a track, smoothly and quietly.
Curtain poles: Curtains hang from a pole with a decorative stopper.
Pleats
Pinch pleats: Pleats sewn into the curtain for a permanent gathered look.
Gathered pleats: Cross between a pinch pleat and pencil pleat.
French pleats: Groups of triple pleats, placed evenly along the curtains.
Still around but less fashionable:
Pencil pleats: Tidy and consistent folds at the top of the curtain that resemble the size of a pencil.
Goblet pleats: These are the most formal. Cylindrical cuff that resembles a wine glass.
Pelmets
Pelmets are placed above windows and over the head (top) of curtains to create a polished finished look.Fabric/valance style: Decorative soft fabric in place of a structured pelmet.
Timber style: Crafted from timber and painted.
